You’ll get swept up by just how much we have learned about this house, and how the people that lived there made it a home.  Sue, who is a docent there, will share a number of the most interesting stories as well as update us on the recent renovations of one of Cincinnati’s most beloved museums.

The Lost Tea Rooms of Downtown Cincinnati…it was such a different world then!  There was a sense of occasion when going to town. Using firsthand experience stories and gathered information, Cynthia will take you back in time to the days of enjoying an afternoon downtown and having lunch in a popular tea room. Last Mile is a Cincinnati food rescue organization that started in October, 2020 with the goal of getting fresh food “out of landfills and onto the plates of those needing it most.” Using a combination of computer technology and its growing volunteer base, the group has already successfully networked with 13 area Kroger stores to rescue 660,729 pounds of fresh food! And that is just one example! Volunteers choose where they want to deliver the food at a time that is convenient to them! Come learn how you too can make a critical difference in the lives of your neighbors fighting food insecurity.

Our annual holiday concert, filled with favorites, will introduce us to this talented and well-traveled musical group! Not long ago, the LaSalle Ensemble performed in a series of events in France to commemorate the beginning of the European liberation for World War II. On June 4, the Ensemble even participated in a parade and concert held in the town square of Sainte Mere Eglise. For the past seven years, the school has held an annual assembly to honor veterans which eventually led to this global opportunity!

The Rosemary’s Babies Company focuses on eradicating teen pregnancy and ending the cycle of poverty for teen parents and their families. Rosemary Oglesby-Henry, director, will share her own life experience, the impetus for starting this organization as well as her dreams for Holloway House. Our Scholarship Award recipients will be honored at this meeting. Rosemary’s Babies is our main philanthropy project in 2022. Ohio Valley Voices was established nearly two decades ago with the goal of teaching children with hearing losses to listen and speak clearly. Ms. Sentelik, an audiologist, will share the details that have made her small school based in Loveland so successful. She’ll answer questions like, “At what age do you begin to teaching deaf children? How do they hear? Why is there no lip reading or sign language like at other schools?” This organization is the recipient of a 2021-2022 endowment gift from The College Club of Cincinnati.

You’ll learn the many things that have gone into the creation of the Cincinnati Parks Butterfly Show held at Krohn Conservatory in Eden Park. Now 25 years in the making, attendees are always amazed by the 100s of butterflies flying throughout the showroom with its special, themed gardens. The 25th Anniversary show in 2021, “Butterflies of Bali,” introduced the unique flora, fauna, and culture of Bali to the Cincinnati region for an engaging, interactive experience. www.cincinnatiparks.com

The Dragonfly Foundation began in 2010 when Christine and Jim’s son, Matt, was diagnosed with cancer. Learn about the family’s journey with Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center that led to the founding of this organization to help patients and families find strength, courage, and joy through their diagnosis and treatment. Dragonfly also offers an educational program that works with local schools to connect students to the foundation.

Cincinnati Boychoir will present a joyful concert of holiday music!  It is a choir for male youth of all musical abilities from across the Greater Cincinnati Region.  Founded in 1965, the Boychoir is a teaching and performing organization that offers musical enrichment, performance, and touring opportunities.  Our vocal ensembles are directed by professional music educators who teach a curriculum not only of musical skills but cultural appreciation, empathy, self-discipline, leadership, mentorship, and a spirit of volunteerism.  Boys from grades 3-12 attend weekly rehearsals, and commit from 6 weeks to a full academic year. Each week, boys come together for a combined rehearsal in which older boys are empowered as big brothers to younger boys, teaching them the nuts and bolts of music and singing, as well as how to tie their bowtie and more. We present approximately twenty annual performances in the greater Cincinnati region, and have performed concerts and completed residencies both at home and abroad. We strive to make the Boychoir accessible to all boys, regardless of race, ethnicity, or socioeconomic need, so they all have the opportunity to experience the life changing impact of immersive arts participation.  Patrick Apfelbeck is their Program Coordinator.

Hope’s Chest was founded by foster parents who saw a “circle of brokenness” among foster families and were motivated to restore these relationships when possible. The West Chester-based non-profit works with more than 100 volunteers, providing training and offering encouragement and material support for the families. Executive Director Jami Clarke will describe how Hope’s Closet makes a difference in the community and how others can help.
Hope’s Closet is our main philanthropy project in 2021. At or before this meeting,  items deemed as needed by the families will be collected. Stay tuned!

The Western Wildlife Corridor’s (WWC) mission is to protect the scenic beauty and natural resources of the Ohio River Valley through direct land protection and promotion of responsible land use. Since 1992, the WWC has worked to preserve and restore the greenway corridor of wooded hillsides along the Ohio River, from the Millcreek near downtown Cincinnati to the Great Miami River bordering Indiana. Learn how this initiative is enhancing the quality of life for people in these communities.

Don’t miss this talented group of youthful musicians and their swinging version of holiday and other favorites, with vocal and instrumental performances sure to entertain all! The high school students are part of the Cincinnati Jazz Hall of Fame’s “Jazz at Dusk” program, which is designed to give advanced students the experience of performing in a club/restaurant atmosphere. The Jazz Hall of Fame offers this opportunity without charge to the student.

It’s been estimated that about half of families living in poverty in Cincinnati don’t have access to sufficient food, especially during periods when children are not in school and don’t receive free or reduced-price meals. Yet, the problem largely remains silent behind closed doors, because parents don’t want to admit they lack adequate resources for such basic needs. Childhood Food Solutions was created to help fill the gap through programs designed to provide food to children in areas of poverty, high-crime and food insecurity in our community. The presenters will describe the results of these efforts and how others can assist.

 In the 19th Century, Cincinnati was a dynamic boom town, one of the top ten most populous cities in the United States. Part of that history lives on in buildings that exist today. This program presents a virtual tour of significant structures in the basin and outskirts of Cincinnati, highlighting their architectural styles. The presentation will describe the effects of commerce, European immigration, and cultural influences on the design and utility of structures that created the foundation of our city.

Small yet mighty, the Greene Machine features the fifth- and sixth-graders who make up the show choir at E.H. Greene Intermediate School in Sycamore Community Schools. These dynamos will sing and dance their way into your hearts as they help set the stage for spring with an upbeat collection of tunes.

This interactive presentation focuses on the life events and experiences that Harriet Beecher Stowe faced during the 18 years she lived in Cincinnati and how these experiences enabled her to write an impactful anti-slavery novel.  Stowe House Executive Director Christine Hartlieb also will discuss the history of the house after the Beechers left and its ties to African American experiences in the 20^th century.

For more than 50 years, the Cincinnati Boychoir has delighted audiences with their exquisite voices, musicality and professionalism. Comprised of young men from more than 90 schools in the region, the boychoir is dedicated not only to showcasing the extraordinary skills of these young singers, but also to heightening their musical, intellectual and emotional development. Learn about the Cincinnati Boychoir story and enjoy a special performance by this diverse and exceptionally gifted group of youngsters.

From the ground level, Rothenberg Preparatory Academy in Over-the-Rhine seems surrounded by a dense forest of brick and concrete surfaces. Yet, a bird’s eye view reveals that ornamental flowers, fruits and vegetables flourish on the roof of this historic elementary school building, serving as a source of beauty and learning for students. The program will discuss the inspiration, design, and creation of the garden and its curricular connections, with participants discovering how the garden both enriches academic programming and enhances the unique urban community of Over-The-Rhine.
